[CDC warns of outbreak associated with EzriCare Artificial Tears]

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning regarding the use of EzriCare Artificial Tears eye drops due to an outbreak of drug-resistant infections in 55 people in 12 US states.
One person in Washington state has died and five others have suffered permanent vision loss.
The infections were caused by a drug-resistant bacteria (pseudomonas originosa) that was not seen in the US before this outbreak. The eye drops are manufactured in India and are preservative-free.
Most of the infected people reported using different brands of artificial tears, but the majority reported using EzriCare.
The bacteria was detected in an open EzriCare bottle, but further testing is being done on unopened bottles.
EzriCare has stopped the distribution and sale of the eye drops and is contacting customers.
The manufacturer, Global Pharma, is recalling the product and cooperating with US federal authorities to investigate the matter.
Symptoms of an eye infection can include discharge, eye pain, redness, sensitivity to light, and blurry vision.
The CDC says that a newer antibiotic does seem to work against the drug-resistant bacteria.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa는 폐렴, 혈류 감염, 요로 감염, 수술 부위 감염을 포함한
많은 종류의 감염을 일으킬 수 있으며 항생제에 내성을 갖고 있다.

뉴멕시코주 공중보건 관계자들은 지난달 이 박테리아에 양성 반응을 보인 환자 11명이 기저 눈 질환을 갖고 있으며
감염 전 약용 안약이나 인공눈물을 사용했다고 밝혔다.
이들중 5명은 점안제를 넣은 눈의 시력을 잃었다.

또한 환자들중 대부분은 EzriCare 인공눈물을 사용한 것으로 나타났다.
EzriCare는 뉴저지 주 레이크우드에 본사를 둔 회사이지만 제조는 인도에서 하고 있다.

인공눈물로 인한 안구감염의 증상으로는 분비물, 눈의 통증 또는 불편함, 눈 또는 눈꺼풀의 충혈,
눈에 이물질이 있는 느낌, 빛에 대한 민감성 증가 또는 시야 흐림 등이 있다.

CDC는 증상이 있는 환자는 즉시 치료를 받아야 하지만
제품을 사용했지만 감염 징후가 없는 사람들에게는 검사를 권장하지 않고 있다.
